The experimental piano duo Grandbrothers is comprised of Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogel, who met seven years ago in Düsseldorf and soon after decided to create abnormal sounds completely without synthesizers. The combination of Erol’s amazing piano playing and Lukas’ ability to come up with complex mechanical means to extract sounds from his partner’s instrument as well as unique software open up dimensions on their second album «Open» that we only got a hint of on their debut «Dilation». On stage, Erol is at the keys while Lukas uses his computer to sample the sounds live, using sound effects and self-built electro-mechanical hammers that physically manipulate and modify the piano’s strings and wooden body. Their performances underline the complexity and energy of their art and additionally demonstrate the influence of contemporary club music on their work. Or as Zurich-born Lukas says: “We frequently play concert halls but enjoy playing clubs just the same, with the audience crowded around us and dancing.” If you’re a fan of Nils Frahm, John Cage or Ólafur Arnalds, make sure not to miss Grandbrothers!
