Empathic Assertiveness or Assertive Empathy - the Art of Equilibrium

We are excited to present you with the opportunity to balance your assertiveness with your empathy.

Goal of this one-hour interactive workshop: We may all have experienced situations where people have been crushed by domineering communication.  We may even have suffered from it ourselves!   Over assertiveness can be destructive. However many people desire building their assertiveness. The right measure in every skill is important, but how to achieve balance?

In this workshop we will investigate how one way to reach this balance is to come up with a positive opposite, for example empathy.   Empathy allows room for greater contribution and for others to feel appreciated. It potentially increases the quality of output.  But in the same way, being overly empathic does not serve the purpose either, as it can erode a sense of self-value.  We will find the balance
Approach: In this workshop you will be introduced to a framework which helps you recognise those behaviours that stand in your way, discover alternatives and identify those that help you best achieve the right balance.  We know that in order to be effective we have to assert ourselves in the right way, but there is an important place for each of us for using empathy powerfully to connect.

Your Benefits: With a helpful balance of theory and practice, this workshop will combine fun and interactive exercises to explore empathy and assertiveness in an appropriate level for effectiveness in the workplace. You will:

  • Get to know the Value and Development quadrant.

  • See disadvantages of extremes and the advantages of balance

  • Learn to apply the quadrant to balance assertiveness and empathy

  • Explore alternative behaviours and make an action plan
